Identification
The species reaches up to 159 cm in body length. Unmistakable with its long upturned snout. Background color is usually beige to light brown with a series of brown triangle markings on flanks. Head is black with yellow lips. Black eye stripe.
Range and habitat
This species occurs in eastern Asia, from central and east China (but not far south) to extreme north Vietnam and Taiwan. Lives in forested areas of rocky hills, with leaf litter, from 100 to 1500 m.

Status : The species used to be common but many populations have declined by 30% or more because of overcollection during the past 10 years.
