Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 67 cm. Unmistakable. Small triangular head with two bright white stripes on sides. Ground color from beige to grey or brown with darker back and transversal white bands, edged with black. Dark tail.
Range and habitat
The species is found from South-west New Mexico and south-east Arizona to North Mexico (Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango and Sierra Madre Occidental). Lives in montane woodlands, scrublands and humid canyons, often near rivers.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Not listed
Status : The species occurs as several populations, many of which being in protected areas. Declining in Arizona because of impact of humane activities.
