Identification
The species grows to a maximum length of 1.6 meters but is generally smaller. Large head but fairly thin body. Coloration can vary from nearly entirely black or brown to jet black with large white areas on flanks, back and belly.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South-East Asia, from western Thailand and northern Laos to Central Vietnam and most of Cambodia. Absent from south Thailand. Lives in lowland and montane open forests, woodlands and rice fields.

CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species’ populations are declining at an alarming rate because of overharvesting for food markets and global persecution of snakes.
