Identification
This species reaches a maximum length of 1.50 meters but is generally smaller. Unmistakable. Large head, narrow neck hood. Coloration is entirely bright dark red with a large black area on upper neck and a black spot under eyes.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in eastern Africa, from southern Egypt, Ethiopia and Eritrea to Sudan, Kenya and Tanzania. Lives in dry savannas and semi deserts, often near water holes, to 1200 m.

Status : The species has a big range and is occasionally trapped for international trade. It isn’t believed to be threatened at this time.
