Identification
Adults can reach up to 1.75 meters in length. Slender body with strong dorsal ridge. Large blunt head with big eyes. Juveniles are reddish-brown with almost black to greenish-black head. Adults are usually uniform dark brown.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in south-east Asia, from Thailand and peninsular Malaysia to Sumatra and Borneo. Other subspecies found on Mentawai islands. Lives in humid forests, gardens and plantations, up to 600 meters.

Status : The species has a large range and can adapt to a variety of habitats. It is often caught for the trade and for food, also persecuted.
