Identification
This species reaches up to 18 cm in total length. Flattened body with spiny flanks and short tail. Head is round with two backward pointing spines and a row of lateral spines. Coloration sandy beige with dark round markings on back.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in North America from south Missouri to Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas, and most of north Mexico. Lives in arid and semi-arid areas with sparse vegetation (grass, bushes, cacti).

Status : The species has a fairly large range and is known from many populations. Local declines have been reported in extreme north and south of range.
