Identification
One of the biggest species of its genus, reaching 28 cm in length. Adults have green to bluish head and tail, light brown body with fine black speckling. Juveniles are turquoise with broad brown stripes on back. Unmistakable.
Range and habitat
This species is endemic to the island of Madagascar, only occurring in less than five locations around Toliara, south-west of the island. Lives in dry forests and thornbush areas.

Status : The species has a small range but occurs in protected habitats. It has declined dramatically in the 1990s because of overcollection for the trade.
