Identification
The species grows to 25 cm in length. Hair-like projections found over eyes and two rows of spines found on back of head and alongside flanks. Flattened back. Very variable in color, from pink-white to mottled brown or even orange.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in Oceania and is endemic to New Caledonia, being found in 9 locations in Province Sud of Grande Terre and on Ile des Pins. Lives in the canopy of coastal, closed humid and mountain forests, to 1000 m.

IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Not listed
Status : The species has a very small range. At least 50% of the species’ range is threatened. It was believed to be extinct until its rediscovery in 1994.
