Identification
Record length is 3 meters but the species is sexually mature at 1.5 m in length and a weight of 15 kg. Males slightly larger. Large and broad head, very heavy dorsal bony plates. Golden brown coloration, darkening with age.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in South-East Asia and is endemic to Philippines. It now only occurs in three locations on Luzon and Mindanao. Extinct in most of its range. Lives in freshwater rivers and marshes surrounded by bamboo forests.

IUCN RED LIST : CRITICALLY ENDANGERED
CITES : Appendix I
Status : The species is extinct in most of its range and still declining. Protected by Mabuwaya Foundation. Reintroductions have been attempted.
