Identification
Adults can reach a shell length of about 24 cm. Oval shell with serrated back margins and slight keep on back. Dark olive-brown shell with alternating black and yellow round markings. Black head, and neck with yellow spots and lines.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in North and Central America, from south-west Texas and south-east new Mexico to northern Mexico. Lives in large rivers and their tributaries in lowlands.

IUCN RED LIST : NEAR THREATENED
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species has a relatively small range and is dependant on habitat quality. Threatened by habitat destruction and collection for pet trade.
