Identification
Wingspan up to 14 cm. Global coloration is dark brown to almost black with a wide yellow band on wings and smaller yellow spots on edge of wings. The hindwings display yellow and black tail. Body yellow and black.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs from Nicaragua to Colombia and on Trinidad. Species has a wide range from south-Texas (USA) throughout Central America and south to Argentina. Mostly found in lowland and midland tropical forests.
