Identification
Large species reaching up to 14 cm in length. Body entirely black, black wings with bright red bases. Males have iridescent blue hindwings and less red, females have dull black hindwings with more red rings and edges near body.
Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in Philippines and Sulawesi, it has also been recorded in Taiwan. Species also found from Sumatra to Moluccas in Indonesia. Lives in primary and secondary forests.

Status : The species’ status has yet to be assessed. It seems common and this subspecies has a wide range but is vulnerable to deforestation.
