Identification
Adults can reach a wingspan of 10 cm. Mostly black, broad and long forewings. Hindwings have club-like extensions, a row of bright red spots on edges for females and a group of white spots in the middle. Body has red markings. Male duller.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in South-east Asia, from Afghanistan and Pakistan to south and east China, south Japan, then to Malaysia, western and central Indonesia. Subspecies endemic to Taiwan. Very wide range of habitats, including cities and gardens, mostly lowlands.

Status : This species is common to abundant. There are many subspecies which are endemic to a single island and could be vulnerable to habitat degradation.
