Identification
Colonies are usually up to 100 cm in diameter but can grow together to form a whole mat on the reef floor. Each polyps has large tubular tentacles ending in a curved hammerhead shape. Coloration from blue-grey with pale tips to tentacles.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Maldives to south Japan, Philippines, Indonesia and Great Barrier reef. Lives around shallow reefs with moderate wave action, fr’om 6 to 30 meters deep.

IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is only local and occasionally very common. It is threatened by climate change, habitat destruction and overharvesting for the trade.
