Identification
Test diameter up to 6 cm, spines grow up to 10 cm but generally less. Presence of a few very large spherical spines, reddish-brown in color, sometimes with light rings. Each big spine has a crown for short clear blunt spines at its base.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in coastal regions of the Atlantic Ocean, from South Carolina to Caribbean islands and Brazil, East from Azores south to Gabon. Lives in lagoons, coral reefs and rocky areas, down to 800 meters deep.

Status : The species hasn’t been assessed by IUCN. It has a large range and is at least locally common. It seems to suffer from no threats at present times.
