Identification
Body length of 2.60 m, shoulder height 1.50 m and weight up to 380 kg. Muscular body with short head, narrow ears, short erect mane and a conspicuous dewlap on neck. Narrow black and white stripes, becoming wider on rump and legs.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in south-west Angola and western Namibia. Species also found in southern South Africa. Lives in grasslands on mountain slopes and plateaus, up to 2000 m.

IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE

Status : The species is declining alarmingly because of hunting, habitat destruction, persecution and competition with livestock.
