Identification
Body length of 2.46 m, shoulder height 1.40 m and weight up to 320 kg. Very muscular body, small head, rounded ears. Wide black and white stripes, faint secondary stripes (nearly absent). Belly partly striped, stripes down to the hooves.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Species also found from DR Congo, Ethiopia and Somalia to Angola, Zambia and South Africa. Lives in grasslands, savannas and woodlands, never far from water.

IUCN RED LIST : NEAR THREATENED
CITES : Not listed
Status : The species is still common in many places but declining in others because of poaching and habitat reduction. This subspecies is the commonest.
