Identification
Body length of 2.46 m, shoulder height 1.40 m and weight up to 320 kg. Very muscular body, small head, rounded ears, short erect mane. Wide black and white stripes with conspicuous brown secondary stripes on rump. Stripes to hooves.
Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa. Species also found from DR Congo, Ethiopia and Somalia to Angola and Zambia. Lives in grasslands, savannas and woodlands, never far from water.

IUCN RED LIST : NEAR THREATENED
CITES : Not listed
Status : The species is still common in many places but declining in others because of poaching and habitat reduction. This subspecies is well protected.
