Identification
Body length of 2.75 m, shoulder height 1.60 m and weight up to 450 kg. Largest wild equid, long erect mane, longer face, larger ears. Entire body, limbs and head covered with rather thin black and white stripes. Unmistakable.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in eastern Africa, in Ethiopia, maybe South Sudan and in central and north Kenya. Lives in semi-arid grasslands and shrublands with acacia trees.
Conservation
IUCN RED LIST : ENDANGERED
CITES : Appendix I
Status : The species has declined significantly because of extensive hunting and is still threatened by range fragmentation and competition with livestock.
