Notes : 5 other subspecies known. Giraffe taxonomy is constantly being revised and subspecies numbers, validity and splitting may change.

Identification
Body height of 6 meters, weight of 1930 kg. Unmistakable amongst all giraffes and very distinctive with its very large uniform chocolate-brown blotches separated by thin white bands. Blotches go from head to bottom of legs.

Range and habitat
The species occurs patchily from Niger and Cameroon to Uganda and Kenya. This subspecies occurs in central eastern Africa, from South Ethiopia and Somalia to Kenya. Found in savannas and open woodlands, always with acacia trees.

IUCN RED LIST : ENDANGERED
CITES : Not listed
Status : This subspecies has been declining drastically, loosing more than half of its population because of habitat loss and poaching.
