Identification
Adults can grow to a body length of 205 cm for a shoulder height of 145 cm and weight up to 250 kg. Long-headed but massive deer with small neck mane and long antlers. Coloration uniformly grey-brown, black and white rump.
Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in central and south-west China (Qinghai, Gansu, Shaanxi, Sichuan and Xizang). Species found very patchily from Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan to central China. Lives in montane coniferous forests and scrublands.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Not listed
Status : The species has only recently been assessed by IUCN Red List. So far it seems safe and its largest populations, in China, are increasing. However, given its patchy distribution, the species populations should be monitored.
