Notes : 1 other subspecies known. Sometimes placed in genus Hyelaphus. The subspecies are sometimes split and raised to species level.
Identification
Body length of 150 cm, shoulder height of 75 cm, tail of 21 cm for a weight of 95 kg. Short-legged deer with barrel-shaped body. Medium-sized antlers, chocolate-brown fur with black legs, golden brown neck. Fawn born spotted.
Range and habitat
This species occurs sporadically in Asia, from Pakistan and northern India to Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Myanma. Species also occurs around south China to north Thailand and Cambodia. Probably extinct in Laos and Vietnam. Lives in lowland tall humid grasslands, often near rivers.

Status : The species is under constant pressure from habitat destruction. It is now extinct in most of its former range.
