Notes : No subspecies known. Sometimes placed in genus Hyelaphus.
Identification
Body length of 130 cm, shoulder height of 75 cm, tail of 20 cm for a weight of 50 kg. Relatively long-legged deer with thinner body. Fur is reddish-brown becoming much darker on legs and belly. Head greyish with nearly white muzzle.
Range and habitat
The species is endemic to the western Philippines, in the Palawan area, and is only found in the islands of Busuanga, Calauit and Culion, in the Calamian group. Lives in grasslands, open woodlands, second-growth forest in lowlands.

IUCN RED LIST : ENDANGERED
CITES : Appendix I
Status : The species is close to being uplisted to Critically Endangered. It has a very small range, suffers from loss of habitat and hunting for food and trophies.
