Identification
Adults can reach a body length of 235 cm for a shoulder height of 128 cm and a weight of 405 kg. Males bigger and darker. Coloration is rufous brown with vertical white stripes on flanks. Neck and head darker with white markings.
Range and habitat
This subspecies is endemic to the mountains of central Kenya. Species also found from Guinea to Benin and from Cameroon to Central African Republic. Lives in closed-canopy rainforests in mountains, from 2100 to 3000 m.

Status : The species is declining in most of its range because of hunting and habitat loss. The eastern population isaaci is close to extinction.
