Identification
Adults can grow to a body length of 188 cm, shoulder height of 1 m and weight less than 300 kg. Backwards-oriented and straight thick horns. Very short body hairs. Coloration is dark brown to nearly black with a white marking on neck.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in South-east Asia and is endemic to Sulawesi and Buton islands, in western Indonesia. Lives in primary, secondary, mangrove and swamp forests, up to 1000 m.

IUCN RED LIST : ENDANGERED
CITES : Appendix I
Status : The species is an island endemic and most of its populations are isolated and comprise no more than 250 mature specimens. Vulnerable to habitat loss .
