Identification
Adults can reach 66 cm in length for a weight of 5.4 kg. Smallest species of its genus. Very small quills and spines poorly developped. Quills and hairs uniformly black or dark grey-black. No white bands or tips on quills, no crest.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in South-East Asia and is endemic to western Philippines, in Palawan, Busuanga and Balabac islands. Lives in mangroves, woodlands, grasslands and degraded habitats.

IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Not listed
Status : The species has a small range and suffers from overhunting for the bushmeat trade, particularly from local tribes in Palawan.
