Identification
Aduls can reach a length of 56 cm for a weight of 2.8 kg. Medium-sized agouti with dark brown-grey hairs, slightly grizzled on upper back and dull on legs. Lower back and flanks are bright dark golden-orange.
Range and habitat
The subspecies, sometimes species occurs in South America and is endemic to coastal Brazil in a small area, south of the Amazon river. Found on Marajo and Mexiana Islands. Lives in tropical moist lowland rainforest and forest edges.

Status : This species remains unstudied so far but it has a small range and could be under threat from deforestation on a global scale, and possibly hunting.
