Identification
The species grows to 48 cm in length for a weight of 9 kg. Males not much bigger than females. Tail short. Hairs flat on crown, most fur is dark brown to blackish brown with longer shoulder hairs. White patches of hairs on cheeks.

Range and habitat
The species is endemic to Indonesia, occurring in the Mentawai archipelago, west of Sumatra, only on Siberut island. Lives in all types of forests including mangroves, preferring primary forests.

IUCN RED LIST : ENDANGERED
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species hasn’t yet been afforded legal protection. Its habitat is threatened by conversion for agriculture. Hunting is also an issue.
