Identification
The species grows to 60 cm in length for a tail length of 69 cm and a a weight of 11.6 kg. Lightly-built species with bald forehead and head sides and hat-like hair structure on crown. Fur is grey-brown to golden-brown with darker back.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in Southern Asia and is endemic to the southern half of India. It was introduced in the Mascarene islands during the XVIth Century. Lives in all kinds of dry and humid forests, forest edges near rivers, to 2100 m.

Status : The species has undergone catastrophic declines in parts of its range because of habitat destruction, hunting and other human-related issues.
