Identification
The species grows to 59 cm in length for a weight of 9 kg, males much bigger than females. Top of head dark and flattened, large fan-like grey cheek tufts. Rest of pelage grizzled brown-grey with golden tinge on flanks. Very short tail.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in south-east Asia from north-east India and south China to Myanmar, Thailand (to peninsular Thailand), Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. Lives in tropical and subtropical forests, including plantations, to 2000 m.

IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species has a large range but is patchily distributed as its favored habitats are destroyed. Poaching for medicine and killing for food are threats.
