Identification
The species grows to 65 cm in length for a weight of 15 kg, males being much bigger than females. Large head with crown of long clear hairs, face skin dark red to nearly black. Very short tail, fur from light beige to nearly black.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in eastern Asia, from north-east India and south China to south Cambodia and Vietnam, and from western Thailand to north Malaysia. Lives in primary broadleaf evergreen and mixed forests, up to 2800 m.

Conservation
IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species has a fairly large range but its dependence on primary forests makes it highly vulnerable to habitat loss. Also occasionally hunted.
