Identification
Body length of 50 cm, tail length of 51 cm, weight of 1.5 kg. Black face and forehead with clear eyebrow marks, white collar and cheeks. Rest of fur brown to grey brown except from creamy-tan belly. Thick tail with darker tip.
Range and habitat
The species is endemic to Madagascar and occurs as three disjunct populations in north-west central and north-eastern parts. Introduced on Mayotte. Lives in primary and secondary rainforests, dry deciduous forests.

Status : The species has recently started to decline alarmingly in many areas of its range because of loss of habitat and unsustainable hunting pressure.
