Identification
Adults can reach a body length of 83 cm for a weight of 43 kg. More slender built than the chimpanzee, with longer hairs on body and around head. Limbs are more gracile. Face color is dark grey with pinkish-red areas near mouth.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in central Africa and is endemic to DR Congo, being found between Congo, Lualaba, Kasai and Sankuru rivers. Lives in tropical moist and swamp forests, up to 500 meters.

IUCN RED LIST : ENDANGERED
CITES : Appendix I
Status : This species is legally protected but law is enforced weakly. It’s still declining because of habitat loss and poaching for bush meat markets.
