Identification
Body length of 120 cm, weight of 209 kg. Largest primate species with longer hairs and bigger head and body than lowland gorillas. Black to gray-black hairs becoming silvery on adult males’ back. This subspecies is more slender built.
Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in three regions of eastern DR Congo. The species is also found in south-western Uganda and north-western Rwanda. Lives in dense mature and secondary forests, also swamps, up to 2900 meters.

IUCN RED LIST : CRITICALLY ENDANGERED
CITES : Appendix I
Status : The species is endangered because of habitat destruction and poaching. This subspecies has recently been re-assessed as critically endangered.
