Identification
The species can grow to 58 cm in length and a weight of 7.8 kg with barely any sexual dimorphism, females being slightly smaller. Top of head looks less flat than for other gibbons. Unmistakable with its uniformly black fur and face.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in South East Asia, and is endemic to Indonesia, being only found in the Mentawai islands, near the west coast of Sumatra. Lives in monsoon forests, tropical evergreen forests, mostly in high canopy.

IUCN RED LIST : ENDANGERED
CITES : Appendix I
Status : This species is endangered by deforestation and forest burning for palm oil culture amongst others. Still hunted regularly and captured for trade.
