Notes : No subspecies known. 2 subspecies previously recognized.
Identification
The species can weigh up to 7.5 kg. Variable species, always with dark hands. Coloration is either fully black with white hairs on eyebrows and sometimes around cheeks, or brown to beige with white hairs on cheeks.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in South East Asia, in extreme south Thailand, north Peninsular Malaysia and in most of Sumatra (except far north) in Indonesia. Lives in monsoon forests, tropical evergreen forests up to 1400 m.

IUCN RED LIST : ENDANGERED
CITES : Appendix I
Status : This species is more and more endangered by deforestation and forest burning for palm oil culture amongst others. Also captured for trade.
