Identification
Up to 94 cm body length, weight up to 15.8 kg. Slender canid, looks sort of like a miniature wolf. Long pointed nose, large ears. Fur color ranges from dark brown to beige-brown with white areas on chest, nose and belly. Long bushy tail.
Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs from western Texas to New Mexico. The species is found from Alaska to Panama. Lives in forests, prairie, desert, mountain, tropical habitats and urban areas.

Status : The species is common to abundant in most of its range and has benefited from elimination of wolves. Adapts well to human environments.
