Identification
Up to 84 cm body length, weight up to 10.3 kg. Medium-sized canid with smallish head and short ears. Fur is golden-brown with grizzled areas. This subspecies has darker fur (more rufous-brown) with dark saddle mark on back.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs from extreme north-east India to central Thailand and Vietnam. Species found in south-east Europe, north half of Africa and southern Asia. Found from evergreen forests to deserts, including mangroves and plantations.

CITES : Appendix III
Status : The species is legally protected and widespread, it occurs in protected areas but some populations are endangered because of habitat loss.
