Notes : 5 other subspecies known. This is a new taxonomic arrangement, going from previously 16 subspecies to only 6. At this time, it isn’t widely accepted.
Identification
Body length of 58 cm for a 40 cm long tail and a weight up to 6 kg, usually less. Fur from grey to brown. Black face with white band on nose and sometimes cream markings depending on localities. This subspecies is brown to dark reddish-brown with slight grizzled flanks. Face cream-yellow with darker muzzle.
Range and habitat
This subspecies lives in southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia. Species found from India to China, Taiwan and south to Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo. It lives in a a wide variety of habitats from evergreen forests to plantations and even suburban areas as long as there are strips of forest around. It can be found in mountain areas up to 2700 meters asl.

Status : The species is very common within its huge range (the largest range of any civet species) and even occurs in very degraded habitats, sometimes near human settlements. At this time, most populations are either stable or slightly declining and the species isn’t believed to be threatened.
