Identification
The species can reach 30 cm in length. Unmistakable, losange-shaped body, white belly, dusky white face, beige back. Black eye-band, broad oblique black band, triangle-shaped black marking near tail, edged with clear lines.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area from the Red Sea and South Africa to Marquesas Islands, south to Lord Howe Island, north to south Japan. Lives in shallow outer reefs with surge, from 10 to 20 meters deep.

Status : The species could be declining locally because of habitat loss and overcollection for the trade.
