Identification
The species is unmistakable and grows to 11 cm in length. Black saddle-like markings on back with faint horizontal lines. Yellow tail fin. Bottom part of flanks white with dark yellowish round spots. Small spots and circling lines on snout.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Red Sea and East Africa to south Japan, north Australia, Lord Howe Island and east to Tuamoto Islands. Lives in coral reefs, in subtidal lagoons and seaward reefs, to 55 meters deep.

Status : The species has a large range but is regularly harvested for the trade. This needs to be monitored. Local declines observed due to habitat loss.
