Identification
Adults can grow to 10 cm. Coloration orange-brown to pinkish-brown with very small bluish-white dots. Blue line on lower cheeks. Short blue lines radiating from eye, horizontal blue lines on back, forming circle under pectoral fin.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Andaman islands to north Australia, east to New Caledonia, north to south Japan, Palau and Philippines. Lives in all kinds of coral reefs, from coastlines to offshore, down to 50 m.

Status : The species is locally abundant. However its dependence on algae beds and coral reefs could lead to local declines because of habitat loss.
