Identification
The species can grow to 45 cm in length. White belly and lower flanks. Upper flanks and back olive-brown with numerous large curvy bands and dots forming reticulated pattern. Yellow fins except from caudal fin that is heavily spotted white.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from India to south Japan and north Australia, east to Indonesia and New Guinea. Lives in shallow coral reef areas near sandy bottoms and sandy weed areas.

Status : The species has a very large range. Its occurrence near coral reefs and in shallow waters means that it could be threatened by habitat loss.
