Identification
Adults can reach 38 cm in length. Large filefish with concave forehead and laterally-compressed body. Coloration grey with dark dots near face, orange eyes (with clear edge), orange tail and dark vertical bars on rear of flanks.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from East Africa to Hawaii and Mexico to Columbia, north to Taiwan and south Japan. Lives in offshore coral reefs, near oceanic islands, to 70 meters deep.
