Identification
Adults can grow to 80 cm in length although they are generally more close to 50 cm. Steep forehead. Elongated body with relatively short dorsal and anal fins but sharply defined long caudal fin lobes. Silvery, black spot on upper gill coverts.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from East Africa (Zanzibar) and South Africa (Durban), to Ryukyu islands, north Australia and east to Fiji. Lives in coastal waters, often near coral reefs and rocks, down to 120 meters deep.

Status : The species has a large range encompassing many protected areas. Locally, declines due to overfishing have been noted.
