Identification
The species grows to 1 m for a weight of 14 kg. Elongate, fusiform body, long pointed jaws. Thin caudal peduncle with lateral keels. Dark blue with intricate black pattern on upper half of back. Spots between pectoral and pelvic fins.
Range and habitat
This species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Red Sea, East Africa and Persian gulf to Hawaii and coasts of Baja California locally. Lives in open waters relatively close to the shoreline, to 50 meters deep.

Status : The species has a huge range but is caught in fairly large numbers as bycatch by fisheries, although it is more and more exploited these days.
