Identification
Adults can grow to 1,80 m in disk width and total length over 3,30 m. Disk nearly circular, tail short with ventral fold looking like a fin under the tail. Coloration mottled black and white to white-grey. Pale underside with dark margins.

Range and habitat
The species lives in the Indo-Pacific area, from Red Sea and eastern African coasts to New Caledonia, north Australia and southern Japan. Lives in coral reef habitats and sandy substrates, down to 439 meters deep.

IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species is threatened by overexploitation by local fisheries, particularly in Eastern Asia. Gill plate trade is a serious threat.
