Identification
One of the largest stingrays, growing to 260 cm in disk width for a weight over 290 kg. Very wide disk with blunt edges. Uniform grey brown to blackish, no markings. Tail black beyond sting. Two rows of clear spines on back and tail sides.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in western Atlantic Ocean, from Spain and Mediterranean sea to southwest Africa, then from east Africa to Indonesia, Australia and Hawaii. Lives over sand and mud bottoms on continental shelf and upper slopes, to 800 m.

IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species has a huge range but its status needs to be reassessed after taxonomic changes. Locally threatened by overfishing and pollution.
