Identification
Large head with humped forehead and thick lips. Face grey-blue with radiating lines from eyes. Body dark grey-black with pearly-white center to each flank scales. White band at tail base.
Range and habitat
Indo-Pacific, from Red Sea and East Africa to Hawaii, Gulf of California, Galapagos and Lord Howe Island. Found in areas of mixed sand and rubble in reef flats, lagoons and seaward reefs.

Status : The species is widespread and locally common. It is often caught for trade and the effects of collection and population trend have yet to be studied.
