Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 45 cm. Laterally compressed body with long head and prominent lips. Coloration is dark grey with black lines and orange lips on head, orange tail peduncle and pelvic fins. Black dorsal fin.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Christmas Island, Japan and Great Barrier reef to Hawaii and Clipperton Island. Lives in rocky and coral areas of lagoons and seaward reefs, from 5 to 90 meters.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species isn’t threatened and has a huge range. It occurs in fish replenishment and protected areas. Locally targeted for trade.
